YOUR MIND IS AKIN TO THE EMOTIONAL STORMS OF THE OCEAN WHEN IT IS HOT. CALM THE EMOTIONAL STORMS WITH SERENITY. (PHOTO BY PASTOR DAVIS)

My Brothers and Sisters, today is the first day of the rest of your life, therefore I encourage you in the Lord to be strong, be courageous, “STOP CONDEMNING AND JUDGING ENCOURAGE SOMEONE IN THE LORD TODAY,” because this is your duty, your responsibility as a Christian, a chosen vessel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Know that God is Good all the time.

Please understand this one truth, and that is, there is always a right way and a wrong way of doing anything. When we lift a brother are sister up and provide them with a word of encouragement instead of sticking a knife into them, God will bless you abundantly. God has given you the power to make the choice, how you use that power will determine your destiny in this world. Now listen to what God commands you to do.

He says, “Don’t bad-mouth each other, friends. It’s God’s Word, his Message, and his Royal Rule, which takes a beating in that kind of talk. You’re supposed to be honoring the Message, not writing graffiti all over it. God is in charge of deciding human destiny. Who do you think you are to meddle in the destiny of others?” (James 4:11-12 MSG)

While a man is involved in sin he will condemn others who are likewise involved and the deeper and greater his sin the more severe will be his condemnation of others. It is only when a man begins to sorrow for his sin, and so to rise above it into the clearer light of purity and understanding, that he ceases from condemning others and learns to sympathies with them. But this ceaseless condemnation of each other by those who are involved in the fierce play of the passions must needs be, for it is one of the modes of operation of the Great Law which universally and eternally obtains, and the unrighteous one who falls under the condemnation of his fellows will the more rapidly reach a higher and nobler condition of heart and life if he humbly accepts the censure of others as the effect of his own sin, and resolves henceforward to refrain from all condemnation of others.

The truly good and wise man condemns no one; having put away all blind passion and selfishness he lives in the calm regions of love and peace, and understands all modes of sin, with their consequent sufferings and sorrows. Enlightened and awakened, freed from all selfish bias, and seeing men as they are, his heart responds in holy sympathy with all. Should any condemn, abuse, or slander him he throws around them the kindly protection of his sympathy, seeing the ignorance which prompts them so to act, and knowing that they alone will suffer for their wrong acts.

Now in closing, I will leave you with God’s final word in hopes that it will lift you up out of your sinful nature of Judging and Condemning your fellowman. Here is what God has to say to you, “So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.” (James 4:7-10 MSG)

Now I say to you, “ENCOURAGE SOMEONE IN THE LORD TODAY.” Think globally as you work locally in your church and community to help bring about a change in someone’s life this day.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2014

BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2014

black history month 2014 03Every February, we celebrate Black History Month. It started in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson as Negro History week. In 1976, it became Black History month. And in 2013, some wonder why we still celebrate it. After all, we have Barack Obama, our first African American president; Eric Holder, our first African American U.S. Attorney General; and Rep. James Clyburn (D. SC) our third highest ranking Congressional Democrat. As I reflect on what Black History Month means, I have mixed emotions.black history month 2014 01

We learn from our history. Winning the future depends on understanding our past. African Americans are the citizens whose labor, blood, sweat, tears and deaths helped make America a great country. Americans know the story of Ellis Island and immigrants. Yet, many do not know that the richness of African American history in America started before the Mayflower landed.

The first African American came to the U.S. in 1480 as a free man. Blacks became citizens in 1868 with the passage of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. constitution. Yet, blacks were treated like second-class citizens for many years to follow. Many black citizens, who obtained a college degree before the civil rights movement, still had to work jobs as elevator operators in federal buildings because there were few jobs available for college-educated blacks, due to racism and discrimination. Black farmers who toiled the land were denied the same benefits and government assistance as white farmers. The black farmers’ recent settlement addressed years of wrongdoing. While no longer treated like second class citizens, as during the civil rights era, America still strives for a more perfect Union with her African American citizens.

When I think of Black History Month, I reflect on the fact that black history was often deleted in the history books or inaccurately black history month 2014 02portrayed in the same books. With the emphasis on standardized testing in the present school system, many students today have very little understanding of U.S. history, including black history.

Black history is ever evolving from the 1400s to the present. More than a month-long celebration of the accomplishments of blacks in history, I wish there was a way to teach all Americans about African Americans’ struggle for freedom and equality that still exists today.

There is still a need for Black History Month, but something far more substantial beyond a month long celebration is needed. Black History Month is needed:black history month 2014 04

• When the attitudes towards the lives of 300 black children killed by gun violence in Chicago in the past three year are treated differently from 20 first graders killed in Newtown, Connecticut;
• When the conservative leaders of our country try to deny many blacks the right to vote through unnecessary voter ID laws and unnecessary IDs;
• When the prison system is overflowing with more black males than any other race or ethnicity.
• When many young black males have a direct pipeline from the school house to the jail house;
• When blacks who have completed their prison terms and paid their debt to society are disenfranchised from voting;
• When the black unemployment rate is almost twice that of the country’s average;
• When the sub-prime mortgage industry targeted blacks causing a disproportionate number of blacks to lose their homes through foreclosure;
• When affirmative action is still needed to ensure a level playing field for blacks;
• When Trayvon Martin, an African American teenager, is shot and killed while returning home because of suspicious activity based on the color of his skin;

Until we perfect our union, rid it of racism, and Dr. King’s dream of a beloved community becomes a reality, we will continue to need Black History Month. I only wish we could go far beyond Black History Month and cure what ails us as a society.

THE LESSONS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME

MOM AND DAD GOD'S SERVANTS

 My Mother played the most important role in shaping my life from the day I was born until the day God called her back home.  Today, I honor my Mother for who she was, for who I am and for who we both are in God, and I salute and honor all Mothers because God created you and gave you a special place of honor in this world to never be taken away by man.

God never meant that every woman should be a Mother, however, He did command that women should be fruitful and multiply.  The Bible tells us that whom the Lord blesses to be Mothers should take the responsibility seriously. Mothers have a unique and crucial role in the lives of their children. Motherhood is not a chore or unpleasant task. Just as a mother bears a child during pregnancy, and just as a mother feeds and cares for a child during infancy, so mothers also play an ongoing role in the lives of their children, whether they are adolescents, teenagers, young adults, or even adults with children of their own. While the role of motherhood must change and develop, the love, care, nurture, and encouragement a mother gives should never cease.

To me, the greatest thing we have is life.  In addition, where there is life as the old adage goes there is hope.  So maybe, if we can get into choosing life, it will not be as difficult as we might imagine.

One of the greatest lessons my Mother taught me was that I must take responsibility for choosing and defining my own life.  When I do, “she said, God will lift you up on the wings of an eagle and you can fly away to that place of peace and tranquility that nothing can stop you from living the life you desire.”  I took my Mother’s advice and it changed my entire life.

Today I believe most people are afraid of life.  I do not know why it is.  We are afraid to be what we are!  We get marvelous, insane feelings and we do not act on them.  As you see someone really attractive and you think, “I am going to tell her she’s really beautiful.”  Then you think, “Oh, I cannot do that.”  Then she goes all of her life not knowing she is beautiful!  It is a shame because if we really do not live fully we keep other people from living fully!

We are afraid of living life, therefore, we do not experience, we do not see.  We do not feel.  We do not risk!  We do not care!  Therefore we do not live, because life means being actively involved.  Life means getting your hands dirty.  Life means jumping in the middle of it all.  Life means falling flat on your face.  Life means going beyond yourself into the stars!

Nevertheless, you must decide yourself, for yourself.  “What does life mean to me?”  I am convinced if we spent as much time—no, one quarter as much time each day thinking about life, living, and loving as we do planning a meal, we will be incredible!

Nevertheless, life has a wonderful way of solving this problem.  It is always very fascinating to me because when life is not being lived, it explodes in us.  It is like trying to hold the lid on when the steam is ready to blow.  Something will happen I am convinced of it.  You will either turn to extremes of fear, pain, loneliness, paranoia, or apathy.  All signs that you are not alive, you are not living!  So if you are feeling any of these things, roll up your sleeves and say, “Let me live.”  The minute you start getting involved in life, the steam lets off, and you are safe.  It is easy, but life lets us know that it must be led.  How wonderful!

My Mother experienced this in her own way, and she used her knowledge of living and loving to teach me how to reach for the moon, and if for some reason I could not grab hold of it, I would truly be among the stars.  Because God provided all His children with the power to choose life and to live it to the fullness of all there is.

Now I truly know that there is a thing called joy, because I have felt it.  In addition, there is such a thing as marvelous madness because I have lived it.  Moreover, I know there is such a thing as loving because I have loved.  And I know there is such a thing as ecstasy because I have known ecstasy.  And I also know, because I have known people who have experienced it, and you can too.  Now think back about some of the lessons your Mother taught you, grab hold of them and begin to experience the joy of this life.  It is yours now enjoy it.
