Sunday Worship Service 298 Calm the storms in your life

ACTIVATE YOUR FAITH AND CALM THE STORMS

Getting caught in any storm can sometimes be a very dangerous place to be.  Many people have lost their lives, limbs, and property after getting caught in some of the most dangerous and violent storms that appear sometimes un-expectantly.  My question to you is this; Can you maintain your “FAITH IN THE EYE OF A STORM and not panic and become filled with fear, doubt, and evil thoughts and not asking Jesus, why did he allow this to happen to you?

Jesus and His Disciples found themselves in such a position, they were caught up in a very dangerous storm after deciding that they were going to travel to the other side of the lake.  Capernaum was their destination; it was located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee.   Jesus and the disciples got into the boat and began to cross to the eastern shore.  Jesus ministry was never without purpose.  He was crossing the lake in order to enter a new area of ministry.  Along the way, the disciples would be taught an unforgettable lesson about his power.

It was late in the evening when Jesus and the disciples decided to set sail.  This was not an unusual time for Peter because he was used to fishing at night.  As they got underway, Jesus went into the rear of the boat and fell asleep.  Shortly afterward a fierce storm developed, of course, this was not unusual.  Because they knew that the Sea of Galilee was relatively small, about 13 miles long, 7 miles wide, 150 feet deep, and the shoreline is 680 feet below sea level.  Storms often appeared suddenly over the surrounding mountains, stirring the water into violent twenty-foot waves.

The disciples had not foolishly set out in a storm.  They usually did not encounter storms at night and did not see this one coming.  Even though several of these men were experienced fishermen and knew how to handle a boat, they had been caught without warning by this squall and they were in real danger, so they went to Jesus, waking him to tell him that they were all going to drown!  So Jesus got up, stood up, look up, and He then rebuked the wind and the wind returned back to its chambers and slammed the door, the thunder and lightning stopped, the waves in the sea became calm, and they said, I am going to hold you and rock you in my arms like a baby.

Jesus words to the disciples, floating in their boat on the now quiet sea, were simply.  “Where is your faith?”  They ought not to have been afraid, they were with Jesus.  They had seen him heal people, but power over a furious storm may not have crossed their minds.  But they should have readily made the connection and have come to Jesus in FAITH, not in FEAR.  Of course, this demonstration of Jesus power filled them with awe and amazement.  Would you have come to Jesus in FAITH, or would you also have come to him in FEAR?

They asked the question to which they should have known the answer, “Who is this man?”  This miracle clearly displayed Jesus’ divine identity.  Yet despite all that, they had seen and heard thus far, and despite their love for Jesus, they still did not grasp that he was himself God, and thus had power and authority over all of the creation.  (Luke 8:22-25)

Jesus is always able to bring CALM in the midst of any storm.  He provides us with those same powers.  They come through our FAITH.  Our FAITH is put to the test whenever the storms in our lives begin to rage.  At those very moments in time, we are faced with a choice; we can act like the disciples are we can activate our FAITH.  When we act on FAITH, we can speak to the storms in our lives and simply say, “PEACE BE STILL!”
