THE REAL SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS GIVING
BY SHIRLEY RHODES
The Christmas holiday season is here, yet in our hurried state to have the “perfect holiday” we may find ourselves forgetting the true purpose or meaning of why we do so. Too many of us get caught up in the commercial aspect of Christmas. We spend weeks sometimes months buying and wrapping gifts, baking and decorating, and the sad part of it all is that some people don’t enjoy it but do so because they feel they have to.
One good aspect of this time of the year is that you’ll find people more willing to give, more caring and loving. THE REAL SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS GIVING, not just giving the best most expensive gifts on our list but giving our time, attention, care and LOVE to people.
We are aware this is the attitude as to how we should approach Christmas but we don’t always act that way.
So as we approach a New Year let it be about a lesson of love and sharing. With-out Love we all lose the true meaning behind the reason we celebrate CHRISTMAS. Let us take time to thank God through songs, prayer and praise for the mighty works he does in each of our lives.
There may be moments we feel he is not near or does not hear our cry, be reminded in one thing he is always near. He is so worthy of our praise, although there are many struggles in the land, we are blessed, we have the ability to make our own choices and we are able to lie down at night and rest our weary souls without the threats of war raging around us, we are truly blessed beyond measures.
So let’s remember how often David praised the Lord; let this be a season of joy, joy, joy, because we have a Savior who loves us.
O my soul; bless God from head to toe I’ll bless his holy name; O my soul bless God don’t forget a single benefit! He forgives our sins; he heals our diseases; he redeems us from hell; he crowns us with love and mercy; he wraps us in goodness; he renews our youth–we are always young in his presence (Psalm 103: 1-5). O my soul blesses God!
On the pulse of a new year, a chance to think about our relationships with family, friends and acquaintances let us do so through the fruits of the spirit which are: Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness and Temperance, let us live and walk in the Spirit (Galatians: 5: 22-25 KJV).
Another translation explains it this way: What happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way fruit appears in an orchard–things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and conviction that a basic holiness penetrates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely (Galatians 5:22 MGS).
My prayer is that everyone will enjoy a special holiday with family and friends and that we all remember the reason for the season. Spread warmth and love to all, have a MERRY CHRISTMAS, and let there be peace and good will to all.
